Our Shaping Governance Programme

Proven to make a positive difference to all boards that use it - fact!

The Shaping Governance programme was our first product, created in 2017 by Su Turner and 'with schools for schools'. It was designed to maximise impact quickly, knowing that governors are volunteers who are already giving a lot of their time.

In just two hours, governors learn about important areas of the school and their responsibilities as a team. They then discuss and identify improvements, and we provide insight on how to do things better.

Our Shaping Governance Programme is used by 100s of schools every year as a tool for annual reflection tool.

Sitting between the other review tools open to boards, The Shaping Governance programme - blends team development, training and evaluation in one two-hour session.  Governors benefit from a safe space to learn (or refresh knowledge) about key areas of governance, sharing practice and learning from our expert facilitators who have a wealth of experience and a bank of good practice to help boards improve from the get-go.

Why should you consider our Governance Programme?

Our Shaping Governance Programme provides boards with a proven tool for improving their governance at a fraction of the cost of an external review.
Our Shaping Governance Programme has been used by 1000s of schools since its launch.  With a solid reputation for impact, we are proud that many of our clients remain with us year after year, with some even on their 6th annual session; as they understand the value of building in time for governors to work outside of the packed meeting agenda.
Here are some of the reasons that our clients use Shaping Governance, demonstrating how it helped their board.
  • Improved Governor Induction: "It showed my Governors what was expected of the role, what they needed to know, and how they could carry it out effectively"
  • Ofsted Awareness and Preparation: "It helped my Governors to be more confident about the school and how they could support us during an inspection"
  • Improved Challenge and Support: "It gave my Governors improved insight about the school and they use this now to provide challenge in a supportive way"
  • Improved teamwork and Succession: "Governors worked as a team to share their knowledge of the school; they bounced ideas for improvement off each other "
  • Improved Governor Skills and Competencies: "The session helped Governors to understand the skills that they needed and how they can take responsibility for acquiring them"
  • Comprehensive Improvement Planning: "We now use Shaping Governance as an annual planning tool  alongside our school improvement plan, now in our sixth year"

What does our Shaping Governance Programme include?

The programme involves an annual two-hour facilitated session, which can be conducted online or face-to-face.  Our proven growth mindset and appreciative approach help governors to:
  • Learn, share, benchmark, and improve across nine key governance areas, including core roles, the Ofsted framework, safeguarding, and more.
  • Improve their knowledge of the school, governor responsibilities, and how governors can work together as a team - providing refresher training for current governors and new insight for new governors - it's great for Ofsted Preparation, too - not that you should ever just prepare for Ofsted.
  • Create their own improvement plan, which we then hold them to account for the implemention.
  • Access to our knowledge and insight between meetings - we're not legal experts, but we are all experienced governors.
  • Demonstrate to your school community that you are committed to improving and Shaping your Governance - by displaying a lovely Shaping Governance Plaque.

We also offer a Multi-Academy Trust Shaping Governance Programme, which supports all boards within a trust to improve.

It's more than training; our Shaping Governance Programme literally 'shapes' your governance for the better!
