Maintained Schools

Maintained schools are those that are funded and controlled by the local authority.  Maintained schools are different from free schools and academies, which operate outside LA control.  Maintained schools have a Governing Board which is the Accountable Body for the LA. 2023 data reports that there are 24,059 schools in England, of these approximately 47% are maintained, with 53% academies.

Our Experience

Shaping Governance works with all types of schools and their governors.  But as you would expect, a high percentage of these are maintained schools.  Su, our CEO is an experienced school Governor and has been a Chair of Maintained Schools in primary, secondary, 6th form and alternative provision. We are regular called upon to support governance improvement and support governors to understand their roles.

Our Shaping Governance Programme was created with two Cheshire Maintained Schools back in 2017, and has since gone on to be used by 100s of school of all types.

In addition to this, Su has authored publications for the Local Governance Association on building key relationships between councils, their local councillors and schools.
