Not-for-profit and community organisations

Not-for-profit and community organisations, including charities and other publically funded community organisations, play a valuable role in our communities.  As publically funded organisations, governance plays a vital role in ensuring that money is well spent and makes a difference.

Our Experience

Shaping Governance supports improvement across all sectors.  This means that we can bring together the very best practice that we see - governance is governance after all.
Su Turner, our CEO, is an experienced public sector governor and has served as a non-executive director in a GP Federation, in the private sector within a local Chamber of Commerce; and held many governor roles.
Since Su began Shaping Governance in 2017, she has worked with charitable organisations  to review the effectiveness of their governance.  Our clients include the YMCA, Adult Learning facilities, Metabolic Support UK, and many charities whose purpose is to improve the outcomes for their client group.

“Su took time to listen and understand the broad range of perspectives of individuals on the Board, as well as making recommendations based on the new Charity Governance Code on how to move the Trustees forward cohesively”
Chair of Trustees and Chief Executive, Metabolic Support UK Formally Climb

How we help

We support trustees and governors to ensure they act within their charitable objectives and understand their roles.  We help them to improve their knowledge of the organisation and how they govern, as well as improving their confidence to challenge and support those running the organisation.
Through our Shaping Governance Programme, we support Trustees and Officers to work together to:
  • Improve teamwork within the Board and across the charity;
  • Enhance knowledge of all Trustees - on their roles, responsibilities and also their charity plus improving teamwork at the same time;
  • Ensure the highest standard of governance in line with the Charity Governance Code;
  • Help their board to adopt a continuous learning culture and be purpose-focused;
  • Be sighted on the improvements needed and create their own improvement plan,;
  • Explore and learn about areas of governance that are often overlooked or neglected.
