Improved teamwork

Improved teamwork testimonial

Sandymoor School is a free school built by the local community which opened in 2012.  I took over the role of Chair after an Inadequate Ofsted Judgement.   As a new school, there was much to do, but something that perhaps took more of a back seat was governance.  This I knew was not good, which is why we were really interested in working with Su and using Shaping Governance.  We wanted something that could value our work to date and help us to set up the right governance structures for our growing school.

The first Shaping Governance session with Su was in October 2018, and was hard - there was so much that we needed to do to improve, and I think that we identified 32 improvements that we needed to make to ensure that governance was strong for the school.

It was tough, but we were all really determined to improve.

Fast forward a year, and we ran our follow up Shaping Governance session.  What a difference!

Even Su remarked that we were a different board. All of the actions that we identified a year earlier had been completed, and we knew so much more.  We were now a team, which meant that trust and confidence was strong, and challenge was welcomed.

Shaping Governance really helped our board to understand the school, their roles, each other and how we should govern.  It articulated the added value that we as governors can bring.  Ofsted even remarked on the improvement in governance at their monitoring visit.

Shaping Governance is non-threatening, and helps you to see how and why you need to act.

Sandymoor is now part of the Ormiston Academy Trust but we are committed to continue our work with Su and Shaping Governance.
