Independent Schools

Good governance is important in any educational setting. Independent schools are often referred to as private schools. They are independent in their governance and finances and usually charge fees. Many operate as charitable trusts and are governed by a board of governors. There are approximately 2500 private schools in the UK.

Our Experience

We have experience supporting governors of Independent Schools in fulfilling their educational responsibilities.  Su Turner, our CEO, has supported governors of Independent schools to improve their practice.  This includes an independent school within Chester, and an Independent Special School and College in Stroud.

Su has knowledge of the inspection regimes for Independent schools, which are inspected according to a framework that has been agreed by the Department for Education and Ofsted. She has supported governors to oversee all aspects of the school and ensure they comply with relevant requirements.

How we help

Governors of Independent schools have charitable, company and educational responsibilities to discharge.  Our support helps those that govern to ensure they are fully aware of their statutory duties and how they can be more effective. We have an excellent reputation for working with Independent Schools and our Shaping Governance Programme works well for Independent School Governors.  We support all governors to learn, share and improve their practice, across crucial areas of governance and oversight of the school.
