Single-Academy Trusts

Single Academy Trusts have less complicated structures but still have the same statutory responsibilities as larger multi-academy trusts. There are around 1000 Single Academy Trusts, despite a Government push on creating families of schools.

Our Experience

Shaping Governance works with all types of academies and their directors/trustees.  But as you would expect, a high percentage of these are academies whether this be single academies or larger multi academy trusts.  Su, our CEO is an experienced Governor and has been a Chair of a local governing board in a MAT, as well as in primary, secondary, 6th form and alternative provision. We are regularly called upon to support governance improvement and support trustees to understand their roles. Whilst Single Academy Trust are less complicated in structure, most Trust Boards in a SAT are both trustee and governor, and we help boards to find the balance.

In 2016, Su led a national debate, entitled 'Whose school is it anyway' and worked with the Department for Education and Local Government Association on academisation matters following the Academies Act 2010. She has also authored and contributed to several publications on the subject of education, schools and academies.

How we help

We have a solid reputation for working with Single Academy Trusts (SATs) to ensure that their directors or trustees can monitor and support the school to provide the best education for children, together with meeting their company responsibilities.  Our Shaping Governance Programme provides training, benchmarking and improvement support for SATs, in fact the first school to use Shaping Governance back in 2017 was  SAT.

"Su's vast knowledge of governance, her patience and sensitivity and understanding of academies were key drivers in improving our governance.  In six months we have addressed many of the issues that we have wrestled with for year."

Our programme provides valuable insight into how to discharge core roles, balanced with getting to know the school, understanding how you can improve and improving teamwork.
