Governance Self-Reflection

'The more reflective you are, the more effective you are'!

Pete Hall and Alisa Simeral

This sums up exactly how we feel here at Shaping Governance: Reflection should be a regular activity for all governing boards, not just because the Department for Education or others tell you to.

We recommend that governors self-assess their performance and impact regularly, and usually at every meeting.  It's also important to take a more thorough review every year.. Becoming regular reflectors means that you are receptive to improving your practice and child outcomes.  At Shaping Governance, we are great believers in Appreciative Practices and in understanding what works well and how we can grow this approach in other areas.

We understand that self-reflection can be difficult at first, and the trick is to keep it simple.  Use our tips below to set you on a journey of creating reflective governance in your organisation.

"Through a rigorous and robust process, with the engagement of governance and senior leaders, Su was able to provide, at school and MAC level, a clear evaluation of how we can enhance performance and improve further.  Su also recognised the distinctive difference of our MAC with a Catholic dimension"

"Su’s approach is participative and guides Elected Members through what good corporate parenting looks like so that they can benchmark their approach. Elected Members are key to good corporate parenting and they leave the training programme understanding their role as a Corporate Parent and practical ways in which they can carry out the role effectively."

Dr Lee-Anne Farach, Medway Council
