Faith Schools and Academies

Nearly a third of state-funded schools (31%) are Faith Schools.  Of these the majority were Church of England (68%), with Catholic (29%), other Christian faiths (1%) and non-Christian (2%) (FFT 2022).

Our Experience

We have extensive experience supporting governors of Faith Schools both individually and Faith Multi-Academy Trusts.  Over recent years, our approach to governance improvement has been welcomed by the sector, as our nurturing and appreciative approach chimes well with the ethos of Faith Schools.

Su Turner, our CEO, is an experienced governor and supports our Faith Schools personally.  Su is regularly called on by Catholic and Church of England Multi Academy Trusts to review their governance holistically, including local school governing boards.

"Through a rigorous and robust process, with the engagement of governance and senior leaders, Su was able to provide, at school and MAC level, a clear evaluation of how we can enhance performance and improve further... Su has extensive knowledge of effective and efficient governance, so her insight was invaluable. We would recommend Su Turner, from Shaping Governance, to any Multi-Academy Trust wishing to complete a review at all levels."

How we help

Single Faith Schools

We have a solid reputation for working with Faith Schools to ensure that their governors are able to monitor and support the school to provide the best education for children that attend the school, and that they are focused on their faith characteristics and ethos.  Our Shaping Governance Programme works well for all Faith School governance, and we support all governors to learn, share and improve their practice.

Faith Multi-Academy Trusts

Since 2022, we have been providing a whole-trust version of our Shaping Governance Programme.  This unique programme blends a traditional External Review of Governance with board support for local governors too.  It is particular helpful if MATs wish to support their local governors to improve and to become the eyes and ears of the trust.  This inclusive process facilitates whole-trust governance improvement, and improves communication and relationships.
