2024, marks 20 years since the Children Act 2004 received Royal Ascent

As a company that supports governance across the breadth of children’s services, I often describe key pieces of legislation and how children’s services are enshrined in legislation.  This year, the Children Act 2004 turns 20! This piece of legislation stands out as a cornerstone for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in the United Kingdom. It has been pivotal in changing how councils and society approach the protection and well-being of its youngest members.

So, this year, we thought we would reflect on the impact of this important piece of legislation,  showcase the changes that the act has made and also the impact of our work.

Across the 12 months, we will bring to you:

  • Special Guest blogs, from great people that we have worked with to improve outcomes for children - across education, social care, health, and from councillors, officers, and partners in the system;
  • Insight from our work with all the sectors that we work with;
  • Key commentary on the latest news;
  • and much more

Organisations we have worked with

We are a leading governance improvement organisation and have worked with 100s of schools, councils and national membership organisations such as the Local Government Association to help 'governors' to understand their responsibilities and how they can discharge these effectively.

Our Founder and CEO Su Turner is a trained appreciative facilitator and has developed simple but effective ways to embed voice and improve the monitoring of schools and councils.

"Su was instrumental in getting our ILACS (Inspection of Local Authority Services) to good"

Swindon Council

Su’s approach is participative and guides Elected Members through what good corporate parenting looks like so that they can benchmark their approach. Elected Members are key to good corporate parenting and they leave the training programme understanding their role as a Corporate Parent and practical ways in which they can carry out the role effectively."

Dr Lee-Anne Farach, Medway Council
